Wow, this has been fun. If you remember from last month's post, Casey and I exchanged patterns by mail and decided to sew them up. Well, we are all done with our projects and here's what we did. First up, Casey's pretty dress. Don't you just love it! I think it is fabulous. Perfect for summer. I love the little red buttons and the simple design is so elegant. Great job Casey! And here's my little number. I went for a sporty theme, using the two piece pattern she sent me. We both agree, that these patterns make up a comfy outfit, which is a win, win for both of us. Here are a few details on mine. I used linen like fabric. I did make one change, the skirt! I tried making the straight skirt from the pattern, but in the end, just wanted an A line style. Also I fiddled with the sleeves a bit, I was so tempted to leave 3/4 sleeves, but went for the short style. I am loving this two piece and plan on wearing it to a causal, picnic, style wedding coming up.
My Spring Challenge, which I wrote about here, has been awesome. I am happy to tell you that I have been wearing handmade clothing most everyday and really enjoyed Me-Made May 2012 very much! Here are two more garments to add to the mix for my spring challenge, as promised. First up, this 40's blouse. I fell hard for this printed fabric and knew it was going to make a nice blouse for summer. Floral fabrics have always been a favorite of mine. I also made the electric blue Ginger skirt to go with this blouse. Both pieces make a great pair for mixing and matching other garments. I found this little bracelet at an Antique Mall near our home to complete the look. It's been fun accessorizing my outfits with vintage bracelets. Although the jury is still out on shoes. I am seriously thinking about Remix, is it a sin to spend 160 dollars on one pair of shoes? If it is... I am thinking about sinning.
Pattern: Ginger by Colette and Simplicity 4237 Yoke Back Blouse

Alterations: Yes, on the blouse I had to take out the fullness on the back yoke. It was too puffy, mostly due to the gathered fabric on the yoke, after reducing some of the fabric it hangs nicely.

Fabric: 100% cotton for the blouse and gaberdine for the skirt. The buttons on this blouse are from my blog header, I finally used them!

Make again: Yes, of course!

I really want to make some dresses soon! I hope you aren't too tried of my seeing separates, but I am glad to have so many mix and match pieces. It sure helped me feel confident about participating in Me-Made May 2012, it's been much easier getting dressed this spring, as I am breaking the threshold of more home sewn garments than not, in my wardrobe!

On a side note, I have been canning chicken and strawberries. Also I am doing a major clean up in our home, going through every room and pitching anything that I haven't used for a while. So, post are a bit scarce right now as I get my house in order. Sometimes I just need to good life revamp. I hope to visit you all on your blogs soon.

Have a wonderful Vintage Day!

I was taken by surprise when Casey from Elegant Musings sweetly emailed me to say she had a few extra patterns she wanted to give out and thought of me. Well, it was funny because I had a few in my stash that needed a good home too, so a swap was born! Soon we decided to not only swap patterns, but also thought it would be fun to post whatever we made from the swap. I guess I was feeling a bit brave as I asked Casey to choose any pattern she wanted and I would sew it up. Within days, three lovely patterns arrived.

I was giddy when I saw the two seam blouse and remembered she had made it a while back. What a great surprise. I loved her pink rendition with the raspberry skirt shown above. Simplicity 3545 is catching my eye too, as I am thinking it will make a great two piece suit. The third is a Jiffy dress, one that I did choose from the pile of patterns she had, the style would be so easy to wear. I could use a dress like that for sure. Over the month of June, I will be sewing something from Casey's lovely stash and she will be sewing from mine. Now decision time, which will it be? Thank you Casey for the use of these beautiful patterns! Time to get sewing.

The first post is here. I am sure if we looked at all the things that could spoil a project we may never sew again. LOL! Anyway, lets continue with number five!

5. Pattern size- If you are struggling with the bodice shoulder area being too big, you may want to rethink your pattern size. I realized last year that I was buying too large of a pattern. Since then, I have been using my high bust measure and have had pretty good results. Check out the tutorial I did on this subject. There are many ways to buy a pattern, find what works best for you, if it's not working, think about changing it.

6. Changing a pattern too drastically- We have all done it, decided that we wanted to remove a dart, change a seam, redo the sleeve style. Although simple changes certainly can be made with success, sometimes too many changes to one pattern can distort a garment. I have found there is wisdom is knowing what I can do and what is better left alone. Only you know your own skills. As my skills have increased by trail and error, I know now, what I can safely change and what quickly can become a disaster. hehe There is a fine balance in pattern reconstruction and it's best done on a muslin. Which bring me to seven.

By making up this muslin, I discovered that I didn't really like the construction of the belt on this dress, it was so hard to sew into the garment and now I am thinking of a different way to make it work.

7. Not basting or making a muslin- It's so easy to be in a hurry with a project. It looks so pretty and the temptation to dive in and get to the "real garment" can overtake anyone. Sometimes it works out, other times not. I have gotten into a habit of making a muslin every time I sew a new pattern. Why? Because I want it to fit and I baste the whole thing first and then make adjustments. The basting helps so much when it comes time to unpick a project for adjustments.

Remember these are only tips that work pretty well for me, some folks are really great at sewing a pattern without making a muslin. If you are new to sewing it's a great place to start for sure. I hope these tips have encouraged you to find what works for YOU! Here's too great sewing!

Have a wonderful vintage Day!
I need a restart button with Me-Made MAY 2012! I have been horrible with taking pictures. Please forgive me for not posting more. I have totally enjoyed the process this year. Because May is the end of our homeschool year, I have been super busy with the boys. Anyway enough excuses! Here are a few selected outfits that I managed to get pictures of. It's truly been fun wearing something handmade everyday. Although I need some elastic in my waistbands due to vacation goodies, it time once again to watch the calories! Anyway, as I look at my pictures I am thinking my skirts could be a bit shorter. It's funny how a picture can tell you so much about your sewing projects. I'll be back soon with another creation.
Did you ever feel you just didn't get the sewing memo? Somehow the bus stopped, but you neglected to get off? I have, so today I'll share with you the first part of a two part post on 7 sewing tips that have helped me personally to accomplish better results. My hope is that these tips will be helpful for you.

Here I am measuring this pattern piece from the matching selvages

1. Selvages, yes those little woven edges of the fabric, they seem innocent enough right? But if the selvages aren't lined up, then any pattern pieces cut from the fabric will be slightly off grain. Here's how to make sure your pattern is cut on grain.

1. Unfold and prepare your fabric, giving it a good ironing. Don't be deceived by the "natural" fold line, it's most likely not lined up exactly!

2. Next, lay out your fabric, folding it down the middle. Lining up the selvages as you go, keep working using your hands to smooth out any wrinkles as you line up the fabric.

3. When the edges are lined up together and the fold is smooth and flat, pin the raw edges (selvages) together so they don't shift on you.

4. Lay your pattern pieces out, measure pieces until even and cut them out. Your garment should hang correctly with the grain.

2. Sewing Machine Maintenance and Tension- Is it time to take your machine in for a tune up and a cleaning? I knew it was time when the tension dial on my machine wouldn't adjusting the tension correctly. No amount of ironing will take out those horizontal lines and puckers that form from stitches being stitched too tightly. Having a tune up or using your sewing manual to tune it yourself, can help produce perfect stitches. Stitches should look smooth and lay flat. Don't let a machine tune up stand in the way of sewing great garments.

3. Darts- Dart aren't the most complicated sewing technique, but a good method goes a long way in making a professional garment. The tie off method is preferred by many sewers, I really like this video for sewing darts.

4. Underwear- This is a bit personal, but I am going to share because it has helped me so much. I realized that I've been wearing the wrong underwear for my vintage fashions. I am talking about panties, knickers, underwear. After sewing a skirt, I had lines around my high hip area, thinking it was too tight I made it bigger but it wasn't too tight. This is where I got off the train, and realized it was time to change the underwear style I was wearing. Enough said, the devil is definitely in the details. Take a good look in a mirror, it maybe time for a change. Don't assume it's your sewing project in question, sometimes it's the foundation garments we are wearing under the sewing project that needs our attention.

Remember these are just tips I have found that have helped me. I only want to encourage you today to find the spoilers in your own sewing journey. If something isn't working, step back from it and ask yourself, what is the spoiler in this situation? What isn't working? Sewing often times is like finding clues. It's speaking loud and clear. The garment is pointing to the problems, asking you to solve it. Anybody else solved any sewing spoilers in your projects? I would love to hear about them.

Here's to great sewing projects!
Over the winter, I made a ton of clothing, but I haven't really posted everything yet. Me-Made-May 2012 is gently pushing me into wearing and posting the stuff I have hidden in my sewing room. So today I wanted to wear this blouse, but realized you haven't seen it yet. I found this fabric at Joann's last year and really liked the print. Anyone remember seeing it there? Well, I bought only 1 1/2 yards, not sure what I was thinking. Then, I discovered a hole right in the middle of the yardage. I wasn't sure how to get around it, with so little fabric to work with. It's times like these, I wish I would have bought a little more. In the end, after moving around a few pattern pieces, I was able to get it together! I have matched this blouse with the peach colored skirt I made earlier this year. I like the combo. This pinkish vintage bracelet works well too! The little green buttons aren't vintage, but I think they add a nice touch to the blouse.

Blouse fabric: 100% cotton, skirt is linen
Pattern: Simplicity 4530 from the 50's
Make again? Yes, I like the blouse very comfortable

Have a wonderful Vintage Day!
Yes, I am obsessed with the Ginger pattern by Colette. I should be over it, I know, but I am not! Nor shall I ever be, by the looks of my sewing room and closet, hehe. Here are two more Gingers, dare I say they have no matches yet. They are single, but soon I 'll be making another blouse to go with them. This is just a sneak peek, a short, little post. These two skirts have been waiting on me for a little while now. I'll be getting back to them soon, sporting the whole look. I am still trying to decide on a blouse style. Any suggestions?

What are you making today?

Happy Spring!
I love this little skirt! It definitely has a casual, vintage flair that you see me sporting so much. The belt loops attached to the pockets with a button. They are so cute and functional. I love that I can switch out the belt easily and go with another belt color to make yet another outfit. The 50's pattern just has 2481 marked on it with no company name. Does this fabric look familiar? It was a leftover piece from this dress. Anyway, I am wearing this skirt today for Zoe's Me-Made-May 2012 and I realized I have't even posted on it yet. Yes, I have made a ton of clothing and am really behind on posting. Although some projects, namely dresses are giving me the fits! I can't seem to figure out a good weighty fabric to make a standard shirt dress I've been making. So back to the drawing board.
Sometimes, I wish I made more elaborate, dressier garments, with high end fabrics and notions, but I live on a farm and a silk dress most likely would be something that hangs in my closet collecting dust. Although I would love to make a few for fun. My life is so causal with raising two young men and I just can't be too fussy right now. So for now this skirt really reflects me so much, it's cotton, vintage and carefree.
Have a wonderful vintage day!

Every once in a while I get the urge to post on a product that I like, but I really try hard to keep my blog a sewing blog only. So forgive me for straying away for a moment, but I just tried gel nail polish with the UV lamp for home use. It's totally AMAZING! I have horrible, thin nails and keep them pretty short because of sewing. Years have gone by where my fingernails have been unpolished because I hate spending an hour or so on my nails only to have them chip the next day. I have tried some good top coats and wore gloves while cleaning, but not much maintains my manicure. I bought Sensationail at Walmart for 49.95, it's a at home gel nail kit. My polish has stayed put, no chips for two weeks! This is a big deal for me, as I have never been able to wear nail polish for more than 2 days without chips. The cost of the product is mostly upfront for the UV lamp. For me, this is a great alternative to salon nails because I live so far from any nail places in town. Honestly, I am not one for getting my nails done, mostly because of the recurring time and money spent. I love D.I.Y. Right now I am feel giddy looking at my polished hands, knowing they will look good for two or so weeks without much time or money on my part. I have been doing some homework and there are other home gel kits out there. Gelish and Red Carpet are the ones that keep popping up. The one thing I like about the Sensationnail is the lamp cures in 30 second to 1 minute verses 2-3 minutes from the other brands. It's also the cheapest I have found. The first time I did my nails, I was walking around the house being careful not to bang them into anything. They were completely dry, so it took some time for me to get the concept that my nail were totally cured and I didn't need to be concerned with messing them up. LOL I did buy some Gelish nail polish because I like the colors from their gel line, they work great with the Sensationail kit. I am a nail biter, although if my nails are polished I don't bite them, so they are short right now, but hopefully they will grow out. My nails feel stronger with this product on them for sure. I'll keep you posted on this if you found it helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
Yee-haw! This skirt needs a rodeo outing! I really like it. I have been wanting to make a yoke front skirt and finally got this pattern off Esty. The jean material was in my stash. I used my twin needle for the first time on a project. It was so easy and made some nice straight stitching for the yoke and the hem. I just had the boots and cowboy hat becasue we do live on a farm, but for real life, I have a ton of great blouses that will work with this super cute skirt.

Pattern: McCall's 5248, it think this is a 70's pattern

Make again: Yes, I think it might make a nice alternate style for tuck-in blouses.

Fabric: Denim! Yes, I am wearing jean material. I will say this, I forgot what color of yellow thread jeans have on them, I had to check my son's pair because I don't really have or wear jeans.

Alterations: Yes, the waist needed to be taken in a lot and I did take out some fullness in the gathers.

Anybody wear country inspired clothing? See y'all soon!
This week temptation got the better of me as I made kwik Sew's Short pattern. Amy from Sewing Through the Motions got me thinking, as I felt challenged after reading her posts about shorts. It was time to take a new look at making and wearing them again. Thanks Amy! I am glad to hear I am not the only gal out there that struggles with wearing shorts. Honestly, I need shorts in my wardrobe, as we have two active boys and we find ourselves at King's Island Amusement Park often in the summer. Some of the rides aren't skirt/dress friendly. And then there is fossil hunting, boating, camping, and fishing all summer long. Yes, I wear skirts doing these activities, but sometimes a pair of shorts are handy. This style has a button closer which I love, no zippers to sew! Here is a picture of my muslin. I really like how they are fitting, they just need to be a little longer for some more coverage. Even though this is a newer pattern, it seems to have a vintage flair. This project was pretty easy, a beginner could do it. The fit is relaxed and comfortable. I did need to take the waist in a bit, but that was about it.

Pattern: Kwik Sew 3854

Make again: Yes! I want to make them up in many different colors!

Alterations: Adding about 6 inches to the pattern's length and adjusted waist to fit snugger.

Materials: 100% cotton for the muslin. I'll be trying them in linen next.

I think shorts can work if they are the right length and for me, also if they aren't too tight around my legs. I am also toying with the idea of a play suit by adding the bodice from this pattern.

This 70's pattern is so faded I hope you can see the details, I was thinking about making the blouse last summer, but time ran out. This maybe one of those garments I wear just around our house during those 90 degree days!

It would cover my upper arms, but gives some sun around the middle. Although I would lengthen the top some. How do you feel about shorts? Can you wear them or are you shy about them?

Have a wonderful vintage day!

I kept joking with my hubby this after making this blouse that "drag lines are a drag", hence the title. This is a flop sewing project for me. It was partly self drafted, which could be the problem. Everyone has their bad days. The drag lines aren't horrible, but after sewing for awhile, it's easy to spot mistakes and they can bother you.

This is the amazing part of the story, I still love this blouse. Been wearing it every week since starting my self challenge, yep still hanging in there, wearing my handmade clothing everyday. It's been good to wear the things I have made even if they are wonderful, okay or imperfect. It's all good. I wore this blouse yesterday and got a ton of comments, while maybe 5 to be exact, three from perfect strangers. My big solution for the drag lines, a little pink cardigan!

I think now I can spot my mistake. Can you see it? It's the shoulder line, where is it? It's too far back. I found this video on YouTube by Gertie. It has me thinking a lot about shoulder seam lines. I may try this blouse again. I love the pink, been in a pink mood lately.
Last Friday my husband called at 3:00 in the afternoon saying "Darling, would you like to go to Florida for vacation? Can you be packed in a couple of hours?" "Sure sweets, no problem," I replied as I hung up the phone and panicked. Thank God I have a handy travel list ready to be printed up for such emergencies. After an 18 hour drive with two active boys we made it to Florida and have been enjoying a much needed spring vacation. So far, we have made it to Legoland, went on an airboat ride to see the alegrators and I took a trip to The Sewing Studio to buy fabric. It was a great week in the sun. We are back now and I am doing my best to catch up on things.

I have been wearing something I've made everyday, but I have been away from my sewing machine too long. Since coming home, I am more excited now about making and wearing my handmade clothing. I haven't been able to get many photos for this self challenge yet, but was able to get a photo one day as the boys and I went antique shopping. I made both the skirt and blouse last year and finished the outfit off with a thrifted sweater.
Last but not least, I signed up for Zoe's Me-Made May 2012. I love the idea of joining others in this adventure. Last year I joined in and thought I would sew as I go, but found it hard because I didn't have much clothing to wear and couldn't keep up with laundry. I am better prepared this year and am embracing the challenge fully. I searched for more information on where the idea came from, if anyone has any information, please share. I just know they were a staple back in the 40's. Kinda like the fads we have today. I have been in love with cherry pins/brooches since forever, but after seeing Casey's brooch she made for her give away, I knew I wanted one. After looking on E bay for awhile at some very beautiful ones for around $200.00 dollars, I found this little, pretty gold one for less than ten, it's not from the 40's, but I felt it had the spirit of that time. I bought it with the idea that I would change it by adding some color. I liked the gold, but it was rubbing off and I wanted red cherries ( such a traditionalist about color). This project was easy and didn't require a lot, but I got the desired outcome for a lot less. I started by cleaning my pin really well with soap and water and then letting it dry. I already had some red paint designed for metals. Next, I took a small brush and painted a thin coat of red paint, letting it dry well, then painted another coat. Finally, I topped the brooch with a clear coat to seal the red paint. I'll let you know if I run into any problems with the paint clipping. So far it feels pretty secure. I would say if you have a piece you love, but it showing it's age, this might be something to try. I like having fun little brooches around that fit with my vintage wardrobe. I may add a little ribbon depending on my outfit.
Thank you for your support!!! I am off and running into this spring challenge marathon. Part of my goal here is to make vintage clothing for the everyday, hence what my blogger title suggest. I think what I have made here is very wearable.

So for the first lap of the race, I bring you a blouse and skirt combo. This powder, blue Ginger I believe works well with this little, pink blouse I made from McCall's 8609. It's been fun making random blouses to go with my standard Gingers. I like the butterfly sleeves from this pattern because they are easy on the arms, although I must tell you that I found them a bit tricky to sew together. The idea for this outfit was inspired by one of my handbags, no big surprise there. It's been part of my collection for a while and it was time for a proper matching outfit.

Although I will be making another sailor blouse out of the same fabric as the skirt to make a suit effect soon. Finally, I pulled the look together with this 50's cuff bracelet that I fell in love with. I love the weight of it, it's really well made.
Calling all sewing community experts!! Please help me!!! This is my story in a nutshell. My iron's reliability is really bad! It is leaking for the second time in 6 months right down the electrical cord. The tank has cracked twice now in about a years' time. The first time it broke, I sent the iron back to Rowenta and they replaced it (for a charge) and told me promptly not to over filling it. So, I have not been filling it to the max line and babying it the best I can. On Saturday, I found a pool of water on my ironing board ( about a 1/2 cup). Bottom line, I love the steam this iron gives, but that's about all. To add insult to injury, this iron has a heat dial that I find very easy to bump and hard to read, because of this I have lost a dozen or so projects due to burning. It gets very hot at times. Saturday was the last straw for me as I was making shorts and finishing them with a last ironing, I must have bumped the dial because I got the shiny marks on my garment. I do use a pressing cloth, but not for an overall ironing just for darts and such. Thank you for reading this, now this is where I need help. Does anyone have an iron you would recommend? Cost is not really a big issue for me as I would like to jump to the next level to a professional iron, maybe one with a large water tank. But I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks,

Yes, I have decided that I am going to sew all my spring and part of my early summer clothing (undergarments not included). This is a big commitment, but one I want to accomplish once in my lifetime. Some people do marathons, but this suits me better. It's a personal challenge that I have been thinking about for awhile. As I have learned more over the last year, thanks to many of you, my garments are looking cleaner and fit better. My goal is NOT to make things fast, no that would just bring disappointment, my goal is to make, with a consistent, steady hand, the best garments to my ability and to wear them all spring and summer, starting right now, today! This is not to replace ME-MadeMay or anything like that, rather it comes from something deep inside me that says, I can live out of the box, be happy in the garments I make, and break any thoughts of perfection.
Why am I doing this? Because pretty is good enough, nice is awesome, and perfection is a slow death. I don't want to allow perfection to keep me from living happily with the work from my hands. NO regrets! I think in the past I have been really hard on myself, others who see my garments remark how professional they look( my mom loves my work, but she is my mom hehe) and all I can see are the flaws of this or that. Most of the flaws you wouldn't even notice, but I find myself avoiding wearing some of my sewn wardrobe because of this darn perfectionistic attitude of mine. Which is to me, a character flaw, yes it may seem noble, but it's a harsh reality that really isn't good for me or my family. And it's chasing after the wind in my book. Sorry to get so psychological/spiritual on you all, but I want to be honest about this stuff.

There are many other reasons I am sewing my complete spring and summer wardrobe.

1. I desire color! Bright, bold, soft, and muted. I am not afraid of wearing color, it's been hard to find in our khaki and beige world.

2. Fit, this is the hardest obstacle, if you were born out of portion, according to those little charts, you know this too well! I am super tired of gaping waistlines and hiphuggers on RTW!

3. Huge stash of fabric- Yes, as I write this, everything is falling out of the cabinet upstairs. Too much fabric.

4. Skills- I want to sew like a pro (within reason and my sanity) , so practice, practice, practice and try new things is my motto.

5. Time- honestly, it takes me longer to go to the store and try on a 1000 black dresses than to just make one that I like.

6. Style- I love to marry a bunch of different styles together. Part of this process is trying new silhouettes out. Time to pull out those patterns!

7. My grandmother dressed way better than I ever will, and I would like to give her a run for her money.

8. I just feel like I am living in someone else clothes! You all have encouraged me so much as you step out in the clothing you love.

I will be including a mix of handbags and jewelry to complete the looks. Are you hard and too readily critical on your sewing projects or are you more relaxed feeling good about the process of sewing? Do you ever avoid wearing your sewn wardrobe, what is holding you back? I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for cheering me on, and dropping by.

Happy and peaceful sewing to you all!

What a great weekend! Sunny, good food, and a happy family. A little vintage shopping was the order of the day on Saturday. Lately, I've been on the search for accessories. I told myself no more purses, but this one reminded me of Lucy, so I had to take it home. I am cutting down, I promise. I love the black and white color combo.
I also scored with some great shoe clips, I haven't seen them around much, so I thought they would be fun to add to my otherwise boring shoe collection. Yes, I am working on finding shoes.

Also among the vintage finds, pins and brooches have been on my radar. I bought a cherry pin too that I am working on, more on that later.

And last, but not least a vintage, yellow sweater. It really is a bright yellow, but the camera didn't pick up the true color. I already worn it yesterday, paired with my green, Ginger skirt while out for some pizza. I have been wanting to dive into the deep end of the vintage pool. I am finding that so many people know how to accessorize, it's kinda a art in some ways. It also reminds me that the devil is in the details, and those details make such a difference. Adding jewelry, a handbag or a sweater can transform a nice vintage outfit to a great one, I find. What is your favorite accessory to add to your vintage outfits?
What can I say about this outfit? It's a bit of a surprise to me, as I didn't expect this project to fall into place, but I love it. The blouse came from an unmarked, mail order, dress pattern. Last year I started making the dress, but the skirt didn't seem to fit or line up with the bodice. I thought of grading it (truing) and did, but there were other issues. So after many attempts at making the dress, it was thrown into the UFO pile. I finally got back to it and decided to draft a new bodice using parts of the pattern. I am not a fan of the edge stitched pleats included on the original bodice, although edge stitched pleat look pretty on the ironing board, they did nothing for my waistline. Anyway, after a year of sitting in a basket this UFO is solved! I really like the added trim for fun. And of course I paired it with yet another ginger skirt in cherry red. The ginger has become a staple in my wardrobe. I have to say, I enjoy them plain, out of the box, but I think I am ready for some pockets or piping next time.

Pattern: Blouse- it's a Sew-Rite 8251 and Ginger by Colette Patterns for the skirt

Fabric: Blouse- Cotton, vintage buttons, skirt-gabardine

Make Again? Yes, I would like the blouse in many colors mostly because I can move in it very well, no tight arms, hooray!

Alterations: Of course. The blouse is a 32 bust, which is perfect for my shoulders, but my hip line needs added inches. With the Ginger I have decided that I need to make them a bit smaller in the waistline. I have been cutting the size 8 and it's about two inches too big. So I'll be working on that for the next time.

Have a wonderful vintage day,
We all have them, that favorite handbag that needs some TLC. Typical problems occur as time passes, but don't worry you can fix a lot of them. Here are some tips, tricks, and great products that you can use for home repairs. If in doubt, please contact a professional. Most shoe repairs businesses offer handbag repairs as well. In this post, we will discuss how to repair color fading on leather bindings, dents and creases in patent purses, stains, handle replacement options and linings.

Patent bags:
These bags get dents and scratches easily. The good news is most dents come out pretty well with a steam iron. To remove a dent, take your steam iron holding it two inches away from the dent and steam the spot for 3-5 minutes, alternating 30 seconds of steam and then rubbing with your fingers or a soft cloth across the warm patent. Continue working with the patent until the dent comes out for the full 3-5 minutes. The dent should be faded and smooth out. If not on the first try, wait a few hours giving the patent time to reshaped itself, then have another go at it. I had a major dent in my black bag and this technique worked really well, again be careful with the steam avoiding getting too much water near the stitching and hardware. It's great having the soft cloth ready to wipe away extra steam droplets as you go. You will find this process is great for scratches too. For scuffs use a Magic Eraser. Your bag will look new again!

Leather bags:

Leather bags wear the most at the seams, these areas are called bindings. Over time bindings can turn a whitish color, they look faded and worn. The edges can be fix with some leather dye. I can't tell you how many bags I have saved by dyeing their binding with this great leather dye product. The trick is to find a matching color of dye. It's also important to test. To start, make sure you have cleaned your bag with some leather cleaner and allow to dry. Prepare your work area, placing your bag on an old towel, wearing plastic gloves is helpful too. The dye comes with it's own applicator, which I do not use because putting the dye directly onto the leather can lay down too much color. I have found that using a soft cloth and removing some of the color on the towel first, makes it easier to be consistent. If you apply small bits at a time the color be more even. Once you have the bindings looking good, allow them to dry and enjoy! One thing to keep in mind is that the color dye can come off slightly when you clean your purse. This is normal. Also this process is not going to restore cracking leather. In this case, you may want to have a leather restorer replace your bindings. If you have a Coach bag, you may be able to send it back to the company for new binding. I had a vintage, coach bag that needed new bindings, so I sent it back and they put brand new bindings on and the purse looked great.

Beaded Bags:
We have talked about the beaded bag and sewing on a bead. This can be easy done with the right bead. Here is an article with more information on using beads. I found it so useful. I only have one beaded bag, so I haven't had to put on any beads, but I didn't want to leave this information out for you gals who love beaded purses!

Misshapen bags:
Bags get stored in so many ways that can wreak havoc on the structure of a purse. Sometimes a bag's shape can be repaired, and sometimes not. If the structure of the bag is pliable. You may be able to mold it into shape with some steam, siting in a sunny place, or using a hairdryer. Heating up your bag will make it softer. You want to keep your handbag stuffed slightly, a t-shirt is great for this. Remember it took sometime for your handbag to get out of shape, it may take some time for it to remold itself. Be patient and persistent. Keeping your bag full will help it to maintain it's shape. I have been able to change the shape of one bag in my collection. It's not perfect, but much better and sits less sideways.
I made a video on how to make your own linings for you vintage purse, check it out here. I make a lot of linings for my bags and enjoy the functionality of them. If making linings are not your thing and you want to clean the existing lining, try some Oops cleaner to remove stains. Lipstick is the worst offender, if you have a lipstick stain, dab the stain, very lightly with denatured alcohol and then use some dish washing soap on the spot. Rinse with a wet cloth. For ink stains use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Gently rub stain, if it doesn't budge, try using a little fingernail polish remover. Careful with these products! They can take color out along with the stains.

Handle replacement:
I have a beautiful, black bag with a broken handle. I am going to replace the handle with the help of my shoe repair guy. If you have a handbag with less than perfect handles, there are a couple of options that you may want to think about. Firstly, you can buy new handles at any crafting store. I found some at Joann or you can buy a vintage bag for it's parts. Because I am a handbag nut! I always lean towards finding a vintage item to replace a vintage item. I was able to find a beat up black, patent bag that I am going to use it's handles for a bag that I truly love. If you have a sewing machine that will sew through anything this may be a DYI project if not, a good shoe repair place may be the option for you. They can sew the new handles on for you pretty quick.

Well, I am wrapping up these posts on the vintage handbag. I hope they were helpful to you. Above all, enjoy your bags, use them, love them, show them off!

Have a wonderful vintage day!
I finally did it, made a scallop blouse. If you sew and like scallops at all, eventually they will find their way to your sewing table. Last week , while in the process of experimenting with blouse patterns, I found this 80's top. At first, I didn't like the idea that it was an 80's pattern and was wishing for a 40's instead, but curiosity got the better of me. Some 80's tops have tons of garment ease and can look frumpy. How do you feel about the 80's styles? In the end, I am happy with this blouse. Being a sucker for polka dot fabric, I couldn't see this blouse any other way. The top stitching on the scallops adds a nice detail even though it's not part of the pattern's instructions. Also, this top is comfortable, no pulling at the arms or back, so I recommend this pattern if you have problems in these areas.

Pattern: McCall's 4248

Make again: Yes! I would like to see how the pattern hangs with linen.

Skill level: I am going to say, easy to moderate. The scallop were easy, if you follow directions.

Fabrics: Dotted Swiss and cotton

Alterations: Yes, I added cuffs! Also took out some ease and drafted a new line at the shoulder to omit the shoulder pads, although I could still slip them in if so desired. After seeing the pictures I might take a little more ease out next time around.

What's on your sewing table for spring?
Due to their unique properties, always test products first on a hidden patch with your vintage bag. That said, here's what you will need: warm soapy water, leather cleaner, leather conditioner, Windex (with caution), Magic Eraser (with caution), Q-tips, soft cloths (no paper towels please), soft brush, shaving cream, steam iron, fingernail polish remover, and a vacuum cleaner. You may also find Oops! multi-purpose remover, Brasso metal polish and furniture polish useful.

General cleaning for most bags:

Start off with a soft brush to loosen any dirt and vacuum your bag inside and out. Be careful not to pull out linings or use too much suction. You are just getting as much dust off the bag as possible. Next, use a damp (not wet) cloth of soapy water, wipe lightly, going over the whole purse, inside and out. If you worried about making a water stain on the lining then skip this step. It's important not to soak any vintage bag, too much water can loosen already weaken threads. Take a damp Q tip and get into the corners of your bag, You'll be surprised at what you find.

Beaded bags:

If you have a very old bag that is in a weaken state I would suggest looking for a professional to dry clean your purse. That said, if you don't see any loose beads, then take a dry toothbrush and begin lifting up any dirt. Next, if there are some stains, a little shaving cream may pull them up. Don't use too much. Apply and let set for a few minutes, wipe clean. For an overall clean, dip a toothbrush in warm soapy water, gently moving across beads pulling up the dirt. Remember most of these bags have some kind of cardboard put into the linings, so easy does it with the soapy water. Allow to dry, store your beaded bag, in plain tissue paper or an piece of cloth. Plastic bags do not breathe and any color printing on plastic bags can be transfer onto the beads or for that matter, Patent bags. This has happened to me! After grocery shopping at Kroger's, I put a couple of grocery bags in the front seat of the car and placed my purse next to them. I was horrified when I got home to discover the word "Kro" had transferred onto my purse. The conditions were just right, a little moisture and the two touching. It took a lot to get the ink off my purse, and in the right light you can still see some color from the ink stain.

Patent Bags:

Next, if you have a patent bag you can use Windex, but do a test spot first. I wouldn't suggest spraying WINDEX DIRECTLY ONTO YOUR BAG, I have had more luck with a spray on a cloth first, and wiping lightly. If you have a soiled area, use a Magic Eraser, but test it first on the bottom of your bag. These erasers can cause DAMAGE to some finishes. Only use if you have a soiled area that is resistant to everything else. Be aware that Magic Erasers can take off the finish on painted hardware and dull some patent leather bags if used too heavily. You may want to repeat these steps until you feel the bag is really clean. I know that some people use Vaseline on their bags to get some nice shine. I do not use Vaseline on my patent bags. After buying a pretty, blue, patent bag that someone had used Vaseline on, I thought I could clean it up. The Vaseline over time had mixed into the patent material creating a sticky finish that was blotchy. I am not 100% sure that the Vaseline caused these problems, but I rather be safe with my treasured collection. Also, Vaseline on patent attracts dirt and dust that can build up on your bag, which is never a good look. Another great way to get some shine is to use a steam iron on your bag. Hold your bag upright and take your iron holding it about 2 inches from your bag, the iron should NEVER touch your bag, you are just getting a few burst of steam onto your purse. Careful not to get to close to any stitching. Take a soft cloth and buff. The steam heats the patent and smooths out the finish, making it really shiny. This is my favorite method of cleaning a patent bag, no chemicals.

Leather Bags:

A lot of vintage bags have been stored in people's basements and attics, they are most likely very dry and need a good cleaning and conditioning. I condition my leather bags about twice a year while watching a movie, that way I am not in a hurry. For leather and leather look a likes, I use Coach leather cleaner and follow up with Coach conditioner. I know it's a bit expensive, but I really like the Coach brand, but any will do. You can also make your own leather cleaner. The biggest thing is to keep the bag's leather soft, to avoid over drying and cracking. As you pull up dirt, use a fresh cloth until you see no more dirt. Be aware that you may see some dye coming up. This can happen, but unless you see major changes in the leather's color expect that you will see some. Just follow the directions on the label. You will be surprised how beautiful your bag will look and feel with a good conditioning. For stains I have had some luck with Fingernail polish remover. Do a test first to see how the remover works with your leather. And then condition.

This was just some dirt that came off my wicker bag.

Wicker Bags:
After cleaning with a damp cloth, for unpainted wicker, use a toothbrush to get into tiny areas where dirt likes to hide. Then try using just a little wood polish/oil, it goes a long way. You should use enough for the bag to have some moisture, but not too much or you will have the same problem as the Vaseline. If you have a painted wicker bag, these are hard to clean because old paint likes to chip. Use a toothbrush to loosen dirt, follow up with glass cleaner, you may be able to use a Magic Eraser lightly if the paint seems intact and you have stains you would like to tackle.

Fabric Bags:
Spot clean as needed with soapy water. You can use Febreze fabric refreshener if you like, my only experience with these products are they makes things smell great, but they seem to attract dirt to the fabrics more quickly. So follow up with some Scotchgard to protect your handbag against dirt and stains. Allow to dry.

This is my shoe cabinet, these purses are filled with the "basics", I just take my wallet out to change to the next purse and I am ready to go.

Storage:

Now that everything is clean and dry! If your bag doesn't need any repairs, this is a good time to store it away until you need it. I can't express how important it is to store your bags away from the sun, dust and humid/damp areas. Most bags will have color fading and warp if left in these conditions. I do have some of my purses on display on a shelf, but in general they are tucked away in my shoe closet and bedroom closet. Another important thing is to have your patent leather bags standing upright, NOT TOUCHING each other. These bags dent very easily. Wrap your favorite, unused bags in a t shirt, this will keep dust away. I do not wrap my bags in plastic, most materials need to breath, temperature changes can cause humidity to build up. Also, I put a small sachet made with baking soda in my unused purses, this helps them smell fresh. For most, but especially hard sided bags it's great to keep them filled with a t shirt and some dryer sheets. This will insure that your bag retains it's shape. If you have a large collection like me, I had to give a few away because of storage space. You can buy under the bed storage bins, just be careful with the handles of your bags that they don't get crushed. You can hang your bags using a hook system designed for behind a door, or hang them as wall art. Although, extended periods of a bag hanging can cause damage to the handles. To retain it's shape, move it from time to time to avoid pressure points. It's like everything else, using it is the best way to maintain it. I have a wardrobe that I bought just for my purses and shoes, it's in our mudroom and works out great for me. Everything is ready to go, when the season changes, I switch them out for the coming season. Click here for more ideas on storage.
Over the last month I have been sewing about 5-7 hours everyday. Yes, my life is a bit slow right now in winter time, so I am putting my hands to work. The idea is to stash bust everything, that includes fabrics that are only so so and come up with as many combinations as possible for skirts and blouses. Katie from Little red squirrel is hosting a wonderful project called Stash Busters and I am on board with that. Tilly is also doing an interesting project that takes One week, One pattern and wearing it in as many different ways as possible. Well, to me these ideas got married, they are excellent projects together. Like Jane, I am a fan of the ginger so I am pushing the boundaries a bit and have made up seven ginger skirts. Yes, I love the pattern that much. For blouses, I am buying as many patterns as possible to try out different styles, I am still in the process of finding a few that I love. I can't wear a Chinese style blouse everyday! he-he. Anyhow, this blouse I made from Butterick 3696, its a simple button down thin collar. I am really happy with the outcome of both pieces, they are easy to wear and still look crisp and clean. I love peach, and to be honest, I wanted an outfit to go with my peach 50's purse. I love the little flowers behind the patent material. I'll see you soon with another ginger combo, made by me.
Over the next couple of weeks I am going to be posting about something very near and dear to my heart, the vintage handbag. I am very passionate about vintage purses. I have been collecting for about 10 years now. I am not an expert, just a person who loves to acquire, utilize and care for my collection. Along the way I have found there are some tricks to buying, cleaning, and making general home repairs in order to keep my bags looking their best. There are some detrimental mistakes one can make with caring for vintage bags, which I will be addressing in the next post. Today I want to share what I have learned about buying vintage purses. Most vintage bags fall into, but are not limited to, these categories: beaded, patent leather, fabric, wicker/straw and leather bags.

Knowing what to buy can save you time and money. Here are some tips broken down into the above categories before you make that vintage purchase.

The Beaded handbag:

The workmanship on these kinds of bags are generally intricate. They are mostly used for special occasions. Before buying a beaded handbag, take a close overall look at the bag's beads, are there any missing? Would you be able to find a matching bead if one falls off? Do you feel confident that you can sew or glue another bead on if needed? Is the bag in reasonable shape, take a look at the stitching, are there any stitches missing or loose? Does the bag have any odors that are strong that may bother you if you can't remove them? Are the beads smooth? Is anything catching your hand as you run across it? These questions will help you to make a quality decision and one you will not regret later.

Yes, they are all mine, this is only about 1/2 my collection.

Patent leather bags:

These are my favorite bags, but are more problematic than all the others in my opinion. Most of these types of bags have hard sides and bottoms to them. When looking to buy this kind of purse, first open the bag and inspect the corners of the flap area, are there cracks on the inside or outside of the bag's flaps? Generally, the first sign of wear comes from this area where the hardware and patent material meet.

Cracking means that the handbag has been used a lot or stored incorrectly, these cracks will shorten the life span of the bag. Next, it's a good idea to check the tightness of the hardware, is it closing tightly? Most bags have what is called the kiss closer that snaps shut.

Once the closer is loose, it's very hard to fix this problem, the result is that your bag may fly open on you at any time. Before you buy, ask the sale associate if you can put a few of your items into the purse, can you close it? I have noticed that if I over stuff a bag or if my items are heavy in nature, that the weight can make these purses pop open, even if they are not overstuffed. It's good insurance doing this little exercise to know you have a bag you can rely on to stay closed. Next, do you see any dents in the patent that bother you? If you look at a patent leather bag from the side you may find some denting and scratches. Unfortunately, the dents do not remove completely, but there are so ways to make them less noticeable. I have had some luck with scratches, but not tears in the patent, although there are repair kits. Finally, take a look from the side of the handbag. Does the handbag's lines still form a symmetrical shape or is it misshapen? I have noticed that these types of bags warp over time. Which means they will not look like a perfect triangular shape from the side.

Some have been stored incorrectly and problems have occurred. There are a lot of great bags out there, but there are a lot that look wonderful at first glance, but are full of problems.

Straw/ fabric bags:

Essentially you will be looking for tears, rips and worn out handles. Also, do the rub test, rub the fabric between your fingers. If there is a lot of disintegration, and the fabric is rubbing off into your hands the handbag may be in poor condition. Fabric does age over time and looses it's integrity. Weakened fibers generally won't hold up too long. Inspect these bags thoroughly and if they pass your test, You have a great find.

Leather:

Leather bags last for years. Mostly with these types of bags they just need a good cleaning. If there is any cracking/peeling or cuts in the leather, you may want to skip buying that bag. If you see fading around the edges of a bag, this can be fixed easily. I will be covering this in the repair post.

Linings:

Also, you may have noticed that I didn't speak about the linings of all vintage handbags. I never let that hold me back from buying one, because I replace them. Which I will cover in the repair post. If you are not into putting a new lining in, you will need to take a good look and sniff to see if this bags is going to be worth it. Stains in fabrics sometimes come out, other times they just won't.

Where to Buy the real thing:

Vintage purses are not like vintage clothing, they are easy to spot. Vintage purses feel heavy, the linings and inside zippers give them a way too. If you are unsure, ask. As you shop for vintage, you'll get a eye for it. Finally, even though I have bought several vintage purses online through Ebay and Esty, I have learned this is not always the best way. In general, I have limited myself from buying handbags off the internet because a picture can't really tell the whole story. I bought one expensive bag online and it was warped and wouldn't sit on the counter without falling over. The pictures looked great, but they hung the bag from a hook and never disclosed that the bag was warped. So I am sticking with going to antique shops and vintage stores. I haven't had a lot of luck at the thrifts.

It has been such a joy to carry a vintage purse everyday. Next post will be cleaning and storing your vintage bags.

Have a wonderful Vintage day!
