A peek at the 50's fun dress
This past weekend I did a bit of sewing. I am trying to use my stash of fabric. I wanted to sew something fun with a little twist here and there. This dress just came together. I threw my hands up and let caution go to the wind. While making choices on fabrics I thought "I should make a white collar, but then said "why not make a pink collar with this funky print?" And by the way I hadn't used the fancy stitch on my machine for clothing, so I decided to throw that into the mix too. I have to say, that I like it, the dress reminds me of the 50's and a bowling alley shirt, which makes me laugh to think about. Although, I make it sound like it was easy to throw this dress together, it really wasn't. The directions that came with the pattern were so sketchy, that I really had to make up a few things to sew the dress. My hubby even came away scratching his head, saying "that doesn't make sense." I have noticed that a lot of my vintage patterns make a lot of assumptions that you already know how to sew. I have a lot of older friends that sewed many years ago, they said women just knew how to do it, they sewed everyday, and some didn't even use the directions. I can't even imagine not using some directions, at least not this early in the sewing game. Anyway, back to the dress. I am happy with this dress, it's imperfect and quaint. It also looks unique to me. I can see myself wearing it to a picnic, or on vacation with my family. I post on it later when I get the whole thing finished, I ended up using my sloper skirt as a alternative to the skirt that came with the pattern, so I am still fiddling around with it. And yes, we got a new camera!
Have a Wonderful Vintage Day!

I love it the pink collar is much more fun than a white collar and its details like the fancy stitch that make it worth making your own dress. Great job can't wait to see the finished product. Oh as for directions if I didn't have Aunt Marybeth to run to with questions I would often be lost on my projects I call myself an advanced beginner in the sewing world.
ReplyDeleteOoo! Cute! Love the print and solid colors together : )
ReplyDeleteOh I love it! Love the detail of the stitching and everything! Too cute! ;o) Can't wait for more pics! ;o)
ReplyDeleteGina, I just love it!! Great fabric print and what a great idea with the feather stitch, (that's if it is feather stitch). You are striding ahead in leaps and bounds. Did you do a muslin first??
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous print! I love it! esp. the anchor buttons :)
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic - you are so talented. I love the fabric and the pink colour and the fancy stitching - everything is great. I can't wait to see you model it. Great pics too!
ReplyDeleteI am loving how this is looking!!! I also think it's a great idea to use the fancy stitching to decorate the sleeves etc, I'm so going to have to try that!
ReplyDeleteHow nice! Congratulations on your new camera, and congratulations on the decision to make the necklace in pink, it is an extra point for this dress. Great!
ReplyDeleteI love that fabric! I would love that lying around in my stash! x
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty dress. I love the feather stitching- a very lovely detail!
ReplyDeleteI guess everyone DID know how to sew! I am hopeless and jealous that you can!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! I like the machine stitching quite a bit :-)
ReplyDeleteMaria.
Thanks everyone for your nice comments, they are so encouraging! Marie, I did sew a muslin first but only the bodice/sleeves and collar. I wanted to check the fit and learn the construction of the collar. Since the skirt was a sloper that I have sewn a few times I didn't make another one of those. I am hoping to fit the two pieces together soon, but thinking of lining the skirt first.
ReplyDeletehopefully I will get it done this week!
Totally cute. I love how you use the decorative stitching. I have a machine that does hundreds of them, but I rarely use any of them. I would love to see you wearing this lil' number.
ReplyDeleteYeah for a new camera (blog posts just aren't the same without pictures). This dress is coming along so nicely, I simply cannot wait to see the final product.
ReplyDeleteI haven't actually tried a vintage pattern yet (I've bought them, just haven't sewn them up yet) but I am a little worried about the lack of guidance they provide. For making a few things up - it certainly looks like you know what you are doing.
It looks really cute. I like the decorative stitching.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your dress so far. Nice details and a wonderful fabric choice. I haven't tried true vintage patterns yet, but heard similar as far as their difficulty and issues. Seeing your result makes it seem worthwhile though.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Gina!!! This is just too darling--I love the addition of decorative stitching. I really must investigate the decorative stitches my (hand-me-down ;) machine can do. I always forget they are there, but your application of them is so perfect!
ReplyDelete♥ Casey
This dress is so cute, and I love the fabric.
ReplyDeleteIt's just perfect! What an inspiration you are. :)
Vintage Girl,
ReplyDeleteI love the pink! I love the pink! :) I'm looking forward to your finished creation!
Oh, I'm glad that you got a new camera. Maybe this time, you will remember to use the safety strap around your neck, tee hee. You know, after I read that story, I instantly started using the safety strap on my camera, for I never did before. :)

Susan, I hope you try to sew a vintage pattern, they are really fun, once you get over the learning curve. Jess, thanks for the encouragement! Annabelle, thanks for your kindness, I always look forward to your comments! Khriste B I hope you use your stitches, they can be so pretty, I don't have but 20 and this was the best one.
