My sewing space

I like the table lamps, maybe it would be more practical to have under the shelf lighting.

Both machines work pretty well. I like my viking. The little post cards have cute sayings that make me smile

These pink boxes have zippers, buttons etc. in them. I find it's easy to locate my sewing notions if they are sorted by like items.

The flower sewing box has my sloper patterns, the black box is full of seam binding.
Ironing board ready to go always! I love to iron as I sew!

Thread please! Fray Check ready for all the serging going on!

The top drawer has all my scissors and measuring tapes.
Both of these pieces of furniture hold my fabric and patterns, the yellow boxes have patterns in them that I want to sew within this year.
I thought you may like to see my little sewing room. I was thinking of doing this post a while back and didn't. Then I saw Eva Girl's post and thought about sewing rooms again. She found a great area in her home to have a permanent sewing area. Like hers, my room is multi-functional, not only is it a sewing room but also serves as a dressing room. Everyday I sit at the antique vanity to dry my hair, and put on make up for the day. This could have been a guest bedroom but it's pretty small and rarely do we have overnight guest, so I claimed it! Whatever your space looks like, finding an area to sew can be difficult. For us, we had to think about redesigning our home to include our EVERYDAY activities. I am so glad we jumped over the hump of having to fit our lives into our house, now our house fits us and what we need. My husband and I even made our formal dining room into a master bedroom, complete with a crystal chandelier. We did this to give our two growing boys more room, also we have a big eat in kitchen that we use everyday and found we rarely used our formal dining area. I want to encourage you, if you don't have a space to sew, to think about finding a closet or room, some place in your home to be creative. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money.  My husband made the counter top and shelf. The chair and furniture were thrifted on a budget!  The big ticket item besides the sewing machines was the music system, which was brought many years ago and well worth it the price. I  love listening to old jazz as I sew. For more information on organizing your sewing area check out this link.  Check out even more here.

Have a happy vintage day!

Gina

  6. I'm salivating. My husband and I are empty-nest missionaries who travel constantly throughout the US and the Pacific Ocean. My oh-sew life has been revived since my daughter asked me to make both her wedding gown and going away dress. (April 9's the big day!) I've been collecting vintage patterns and am ready for some real fun here soon.

Hopefully, when we get settled back in Manila, the Philippines, I'll have a marvelous space in which to create, too! Yippee!

  9. Thanks for showing off your pretty sewing room, how lovely just like you. I like that long counter and that is what I have so far in mine for crafting and I find myself cutting out on that too. I'm still waiting for that wall of cabinets with the middle having a counter to put the machine. We have a similar machine as after sewing on a 1947 Singer for all of my life (still have it) when we moved to Alaska I bought a Viking and I love moving up to the modern age !! It's a beautiful and easy to use machine. Only one thing I don't like about it and I wonder about yours is the back up or reverse is awkward to use. Nan

  12. Oh! So cute! you have everything so neat and ordered! I don't have a proper sewing room, I sew in my dining room because that's the ONLY table I have, in the closet's tv room I have my fabric...I guess I have a big quantity...and I keep buying and NOT sewing, my buttons , zippers and so on I have them in shoe boxes..my husband tells me I need to find a place at home to have my sewing room and ORDER all the mess, I need a cabinet to put all the fabrics in order, now I have it in plastic bags with labels on them BUT I know I need a proper place to keep them.
I hope soon to have a sewing room like yours then I'll be proud to show it =)

  14. That is a lovely sewing room! I agree with you, having your own space for creativity is important. I have about 3/4 of a room but hoping to get a full room just for myself soon.

  15. Oh my, is this ever lovely. I would sew all the time if I had a space like this. I recently moved my "sewing room" from the kitchen table to a card table in the spare bedroom - it helps some.

  16. I love your sewing space--it looks so pretty and like such an inspiring spot to spend hours happily making things. :) I agree: setting up a sewing spot doesn't have to be super expensive; I'm really thankful for the little section of our spare bedroom (which is the guest room/husband's office/exercise room too!) that I have. Prior to that my sewing stuff was in my bedroom and had to be shuffled around all my other stuff. hehe!

Susan- well maybe so, it's not too bad lol

You all are the best, thanks for your kind comments. I do have to say, I am very grateful for everything I have with this space, I don't take it for granted and consider it a privilege to have a place to sew.

You have a very nice sewing space. You may have organized it on a budget, but it looks very professional and functional. I am sure that you are proud of yourself.

  19. Hi Gina - I'm visiting from Nan Retired To Alaska's blog. I love your sewing/dressing room. And it's so neat. When I sew it's a mess. I have my Grandma's old vintage Singer, my computerized New Home from the early 1980s and a Viking Serger (that I haven't really had a chance to use). Your dresses are just beautiful and you look so pretty in them.
    Hugs,
    Sandy

  22. I'm just a little jealous...okay, I'm a lot jealous! My sewing space is half of the living room right now. With a one year old, if I want to sew, I have to be right in the middle of things so I can watch her at the same time. But one day I dream of having such a beautiful space to myself. Thanks for sharing!

  24. So perfect Gina! My so-called sewing space is just a messy

  25. You are so lucky! The long counter is TDF... Does it always look this clean?

  26. A sewn Wardrobe, my room goes from very clean to messy very fast. I have to clean it up every few days. I try to keep it cleaned up or I can't concentration very well. I need to have a place for things or it takes me forever to find an item like, the seam ripper. When you lose that a couple of times, you learn to put things back very quickly. So I clean up to reduce frustration and time loss while sewing. I think whatever works for you is best, if you can find stuff great, if it's helpful to have a place for your stuff then do it for yourself, you will be happier in the end.
