Scallop Collar Blouse

I finally did it,  made a scallop blouse. If you sew and like scallops at all, eventually they will find their way to your sewing table. Last week , while in the process of experimenting with blouse patterns, I found this 80's top. At first, I didn't like the idea that it was an 80's pattern and was wishing for a 40's instead, but curiosity got the better of me. Some 80's tops have tons of garment ease and can look frumpy.  How do you feel about the 80's styles? In the end, I am happy with this blouse. Being a sucker for polka dot fabric, I couldn't see this blouse any other way. The top stitching on the scallops adds a nice detail even though it's not part of the pattern's instructions. Also, this top is comfortable, no pulling at the arms or back, so I recommend this pattern if you have problems in these areas.

Pattern: McCall's 4248

Make again: Yes! I would like to see how the pattern hangs with linen.

Skill level: I am going to say, easy to moderate. The scallop were easy, if you follow directions.

Fabrics: Dotted Swiss and cotton

Alterations: Yes, I added cuffs! Also took out some ease and drafted a new line at the shoulder to omit the shoulder pads, although I could still slip them in if so desired. After seeing the pictures I might take a little more ease out next time around.

What's on your sewing table for spring?

Have a wonderful Vintage Day,

Gina

  1. Lovely Gina, you can't go wrong with a scalloped collar and a polka dot fabric ;o) Despite your reservations, I actually think that the fit is pretty spot on as well!

  2. It is very pretty and perfect for spring Gina! I remember in the 80's a lot of it was inspired by the 40's anyway!

    1. You are right Sherry, it seems with the 80's they used a lot of the 40's styles, just added a lot of ease and the shoulder pads were so big. Thanks for your sweet comment.

  5. This is beautiful Gina and your photos are just stunning. You look really thin I might add so no problems there. I also notice you put your button holes in the left front not the right side. Do you just prefer them this way? I typically do not like the 80's patterns at all but love what you did here. Nan

    1. Hi Nan! Thanks, I always put my buttons on the side that lays the best. With this blouse the collar naturally wanted to lap over in the one direction, I don't really prefer them on either side, but next time I'll try the right side for fun. He He!

  7. Boy, that came out good. Looks professional. I made a dress with a scallop detail on the shoulders, and they are not easy.

    1. Oh Mary, understood! I would have loved to make the sleeve scalloped too, but how many hours can a girl spend on one blouse? Too many projects in my head!

    1. Thanks Tasha, polka dots are a favorite. I have a bunch in my stash that needs to be made up into something. I could wear them everyday.

  9. Super cute! I just picked up an 80s skirt pattern with 4 super cute 40s style pocket options. Hopefully my 80s does 40s will come out as nice as yours!

  10. Looks good - do you have plans to make a skirt or pants to go with it? Or do you already have some pieces that will work well with this blouse?

    1. I am still up in the air about it, but I have some white shorts and a white skirt. I am also wondering about the color wheel, thinking it might go good with something else too.

  11. Your top is perfect for spring! The forties look was popular in the 80's so this blouse has a real forties vibe! I would have never pegged it as 80's. But I do like 89's minidress styles.

    1. Those are really pretty. I remember mini skirts back in the day. They came above the knee but created such a stir.

    1. Thanks, I glad the scalloped came out and looked cute rather than 80's.

  14. How perfectly cute! I love scallops (and dots!) I actually searched and searched for a 1940s top, with gathering at the shoulder yokes, for weeks and weeks on ebay and etsy. Then I discovered a 1980s top that was practically IDENTICAL. I'm much more likely to find my size in an 80s pattern than a 40s one! So I did buy it and now I just need to stitch it up. I've been a little obsessed with some 80s fashions since (a'la Sally Field in Murphy's Romance).

    1. I haven't seen that movie, I need to look into it. I am glad you found a good pattern, I guess women were smaller busted back in the day. I have noticed too that there are a lot of 30 bust patterns out there, but I don't know very many women who could wear that size, s they are a child. I am looking forward to seeing your yoke top.

  15. This doesn't remind of an 80's top! I LOVE the scallops, the fabric and contrast with the white. Very nice!
