Spring Challenge Outfit 2

My Spring Challenge, which I wrote about here, has been awesome. I am happy to tell you that I have been wearing handmade clothing most everyday and really enjoyed Me-Made May 2012 very much! Here are two more garments to add to the mix for my spring challenge, as promised.  First up, this 40's blouse.  I fell hard for this printed fabric and knew it was going to make a nice blouse for summer. Floral fabrics have always been a favorite of mine. I also made the electric blue Ginger skirt to go with this blouse. Both pieces make a great pair for mixing and matching other garments. I found this little bracelet at an Antique Mall near our home to complete the look.  It's been fun accessorizing my outfits with vintage bracelets. Although the jury is still out on shoes. I am seriously thinking about Remix, is it a sin to spend 160 dollars on one pair of shoes? If it is... I am thinking about sinning.

Pattern: Ginger by Colette and Simplicity 4237 Yoke Back Blouse

Alterations: Yes, on the blouse I had to take out the fullness on the back yoke. It was too puffy, mostly due to the gathered fabric on the yoke, after reducing some of the fabric it hangs nicely.

Fabric: 100% cotton for the blouse and gaberdine for the skirt. The buttons on this blouse are from my blog header, I finally used them!

Make again: Yes, of course!

I really want to make some dresses soon! I hope you aren't too tried of my seeing separates, but I am glad to have so many mix and match pieces. It sure helped me feel confident about participating in Me-Made May 2012,  it's been much easier getting dressed this spring, as I am breaking the threshold of more home sewn garments than not, in my wardrobe!

On a side note, I have been canning chicken and strawberries. Also I am doing a major clean up in our home, going through every room and pitching anything that I haven't used for a while. So, post are a bit scarce right now as I get my house in order. Sometimes I just need to good life revamp. I hope to visit you all on your blogs soon.

Have a wonderful Vintage Day!

Gina

  1. Such a pretty outfit! I love that you've been making separates that match. As for the shoes, have you looked at Seychelles brand? Not quite as period correct looking as they Remi, but most are priced around or under the $100 mark. And, if you have small enough feet, Etsy and Ebay are full of true vintage shoes. :]

  2. Lovely! The way I look at shoes is that you have to think about the cost per wear. If you pick a pair that will go with loads of things and you'll wear all the time then the price would be worth it.

  3. I agree with Stephanie. If you way the pros and cons, just think how much you'll wear them. If you get a neutral color, you'll most likely wear them more, since they'll go with just about anything. But I guess me, I could not justify paying that much for just shoes. My tops is $50 and that is pushing it.

    1. I am pretty cheap about shoes in general, that's why it surprised at myself. I think if a shoe was really comfortable and I could live in them I would do it but I am still hopeful for a cheaper shoe that would work well.

  4. I have really enjoyed seeing your separates, so I have not missed the dresses. Very inspiring for me since I try to sew more separates than dresses at the moment.

  5. I adore this blouse print something I would love to wear too. The skirt is perfect with it too. On shoes my tops is 64. dollars. The reason being I don't wear them much. I've been into buying shoes lately on Modcloth as I have all these outfits that need cute shoes with them, this is pretty much a first for me never been a shoe person. Recently I bought purple ones!

    1. I love your purple shoes. I am not a shoe person either, but I do admire some of the pretty vintage styles from days gone by. Those women were lucky in the 40's.

  6. Lovely outfit! And congrats on using your blog header buttons, I don't think I've used mine yet. lol Love the floral print of your blouse.

And I'm glad to see your Ginger with a little longer length. I have been wanting to make that pattern but below the knee, so it's nice to see your finished one in a similar length!

    1. Tasha, you could do a below the knee length, it would look really great on you. I think it helps to have slender legs. I have a thicker leg than most ( which I don't like) and sometimes I just can't pull that look off, especially mid calf length. Good luck with your skirt!

  7. I love the blouse and understand why you fell for it. It simply makes a perfect blouse. You always seem to have an accessory for every outfit you make, I am jealous of your coordinating skills.

    1. Maw, yes, isn't it wonderful? just walking through the house and knowing the drawers are organized feels so good. I just canned chicken for the first time and it was really good, put it into a chicken lasagna. yum! Hey, slow and steady wins the race, keep at that cleaning!:)

  9. Oh my, this might be one of my favourite of your outfits to date! The blouse with that floral print is totally my style and I think the Ginger pattern was made for you, especially in that electric blue! I've loved seeing your seperates, they are exactly what I'd like in my wardrobe, apart from I really struggle to get a flattering fit with skirts!

    1. Really? Thank you Marie! I would be interested in what you are struggling with when it comes to skirts. Is it the length? The waistband? Aline or straight styles? There has to be something that will work with your body. I have always thought your creations are fitted perfectly.

    1. Thanks Bri, I don't wear much blue due to when I was growing up with my sister she always got the blue dress because of her blue eyes. Funny how I have to force myself to look at blue fabrics.

  15. Hi Gina I am really enjoying your blog and your style. I am making more of my own clothes again, after some years. I live in the country too (although in England!), mostly I need relaxed clothes. I know you are busy at the moment, but I when you have time, please would you be able to tell me whether you line your cotton summer skirts with a light lining or not? I ask because yours hang so well! Thanks, Philippa X

    1. Thank you Phil, nice to meet you, thanks for stopping by. Well, I never line my skirts. Mostly because I don't like linings at all, even in RTW. Linings feel very uncomfortable to me, I love wearing a vintage slip! They come in so many pretty colors. Hope that helps!

    2. What a great idea. Sounds silly but I hadn't thought of that - and I always wore a slip when I was a young girl (my Mum dressed me in Laura Ashley and a proper petticoat was very much part of that look.) I'm off to have a look to see what I can find! Thank you!

    1. Good luck Sally! Well, I didn't get my chicken right, made a mistake with the pressure, so all the chicken went into the freezer for quick meals. Salsa will be wonderful. I hope you enjoy your class. good luck!

  20. Gina, I just found your blog while browsing some other blogs and I love it. I love everything vintage even though I have not found great vintage patterns but I am in love with this top. In fact, I am heading to ebay right now to see if I can find that pattern. I think your blog will motivate me to make more vintage wear. I like a lot of mod dresses from the 70s so I make lots of those. Check out my blog when you have a chance its DarcyRo.blogspot.com. Glad I can follow you.
