Sewing mishap!

This pattern doesn't look interesting, but I feel the lines may yield something rather pretty. This fabric is a stretch from the thrift.

If you have been sewing for very long, you know there are wonderful sewing days and hard, frustrating days. Even with the best intentions, a project can quickly turn to disaster in one misstep!  That's what has happened here. Sometimes I struggle with interpreting a patterns instructions, mostly because I am a self taught seamstress.  I have learned to mull over a pattern's instruction before jumping in, but still can be caught off guard by an arrow or dot.  Today was one of those days. I had to laugh at this little bump that was created by my mistake in sewing up the seams. Somebody find me a seam ripper please!  So it's time for a little laugh and a restart button. Take heart if you have had a sewing day like this. It can happen to anyone and the "fix" most times is a seam ripper and a good read of the instructions one more time.

Have a wonderful vintage day!

  1. Great advice Gina, I'm impressed that you seem to taking this blip calmly. I'm sure you'll fix the problem soon and will have a lovely dress at the end of it!

  2. Ah yes, the seam ripper is one of the most important tools - not my favorite one, but I always keep it close!

  4. Wow Gina, nice way to take it in your stride! I love the seam ripper, it's probably my best friend. I remember when I bought my machine as a total beginner (ahem, at the start of the year) and the sales lady gave me a good quality one. I thought nothing of it at the time, but now I'm thinking of sending her a thank you card!

  5. I actually like this pattern, even though you said it wasn't very exciting.

I haven't been sewing very long, but I am learning that sewing takes ALOT of patience. At any rate, I'm glad that you can have a sense of humor about this. I hope it is something I learn to have when I begin sewing with patterns.

  8. Ah yes, there definitely are seam ripper days. Which is usually at a point in sewing when I need to take a step back and do something different... ;)

  9. Yep. Sometimes I too must rip what I sew. Sorry, but you gleaned a grin outta me, friend. I quickly wiped it away, though. Promise. Wanna borrow my "Been there, done that" T-shirt?

  10. Thank you Gina for reminding me that I can be human too. I should just go for the sewing experience and then post my mistakes instead of stalling for fear of failure. :)

  11. Ha, I've been doing some seam ripping today. But the bump would be an interesting design detail....

  12. If I had a dollar for every time I had a sewing mishap, I'd be a rich woman! ;) lol. I love your sense of humor and not being too stressed about making a mistake; this is something I must remember for myself. Sometimes when I make a sewing error, I let it really get to me--which does no one any good in the end! :p

    Here's to more sewing successes!

  13. We all have bad sewing days! Thanks for sharing. For me it's usually the projects which I think are going to be a cinch that get to me. When I was younger I used to get so frustrated and just give up ! I went to design school but they didn't really tech us how to sew, just one classs, and I was constantly in tears over projects.
